There are two common ways to learn how to windsurf - trial and error or lessons. The trial
and error method can be a wet experience. We encourage beginners to attempt their first
windsurfing experience in an RYA Level I lesson format. Windurfing lessons are FUN!
Lessons make the learning experience more enjoyable, have you sailing much more
quickly, and with a much better base of skills than if you tried it on your own.
Instructors at redeye can prevent you from picking up bad habits that you will have to
unlearn or correct later. Of course you can learn to windsurf on your own, but we feel you
are depriving yourself of a fun, invaluable experience. Remember windsurfing utilizes a
technique - not brute strength. All of us at redeye will make what appears to be difficult a
lot easier and you'll soon be enjoying the sport of windsurfing! We can provide the skills
you are looking for in much less time than you could ever do on your own with trial and
error.
Level 1-Introduction to Windsurfing
Big boards and small sails will have you sailing out and back on your first lesson. Learn the
basics of sail trim, board steering, and turning around in your first lesson. Your lesson
starts with a brief orientation on the beach, where your instructor may elect to have you
practice on the simulator before entering the water. In the water, you will learn to steer
and turn before you sail out. After you master turning around, your instructor will teach
you to sail. Stable boards, easy to handle sail, and good instruction equal immediate
success.
All equipment is included. The redeye school van takes the school boards to the best
beach every morning with the best conditions. For entry level and long board sailing all
you need is a bathing suit, sun screen, and a towel; we provide everything else!
Kids Lessons
Specialized kids boards and sails are designed to make learning easy & fun. Children as
young as six years old can now experience the thrills of windsurfing. We do require an
ability to swim and willingness to try. In June, July and August we offer Kids Summer
Camps for ages 9 to 16. All abilities welcome!
Level 2-Longboard Sailing
Long Board Sailing is a great way to learn new maneuvers, such as beach starts, harnessing,
tacking, and jibing. Learning these skills on a big board will help you master them on your
short board. Long board sailing lessons are held every morning and all day on lighter wind
days. Practice your jibe on these stable boards, and learning to jibe a short board will be
significantly easier.
Level 3-Waterstarting
Mastering water starts is the ticket to riding a short board. Once you achieve this
challenging maneuver, you'll wonder why it was so hard to learn. Working with an
instructor is highly recommended, as you will receive help rigging and tuning your gear, if
it is needed. Then your lesson will start on the beach, where you will practice segments of
the waterstart.
When you enter the water, your instructor will stay right next to you, giving you feedback
and confidence on your technique.
